Your Prayer Has Been Heard
Luke 1:8–13
God never forgets His promises or His people.
Zechariah’s ministry began like every other priest’s: waiting for his turn to serve in the temple, fulfilling the duties handed down through generations. Year after year he showed up faithfully . . .offering sacrifices, leading prayers, teaching God’s Word. Nothing about his life seemed extraordinary. But on this day, the lot fell to him to enter the Holy Place and burn incense before the Lord. For Zechariah, this was a once-in-a-lifetime privilege.
As worshipers prayed outside, Zechariah stepped into the quiet glow of the temple. Suddenly the silence shattered. Standing beside the altar was an angel of the Lord. Fear seized him, just as it would any of us. When heaven breaks into earth, it’s never casual. Yet Gabriel’s first words were full of comfort: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard.”
Those words must have landed with incredible force. For years Zechariah and Elizabeth had prayed for a child, and for centuries God’s people had prayed for deliverance. In one announcement, Gabriel affirmed that both longings would be answered. Their son would prepare the way for the Lord Himself. The message was personal and redemptive all at once. It was proof that God remembers every promise and every prayer, even the ones we’ve stopped mentioning aloud.
Gabriel’s words remind us that waiting seasons are not wasted seasons. God’s timing is never arbitrary. He uses years of ordinary faithfulness to prepare His servants for moments of extraordinary grace. The same Lord who heard Zechariah’s prayer hears ours today. And in His perfect time, He answers... sometimes in ways that reach far beyond anything we imagined.
___________
For Young Ones: Can you think of a prayer you’ve prayed more than once? How does it feel to know God always hears you, even when you wait?
For Older Ones: What long-standing prayers have you quietly stopped bringing to God? How might Zechariah’s story encourage you to keep praying?
Pray: Lord, thank You that You never forget Your people or their prayers. Teach us to wait with faith and serve You faithfully while we wait.
Family Practice: As a family, choose one prayer request you’ll keep praying this week. Write it down and thank God for hearing it, even before the answer comes.
